Is there only one type of group 35 battery?
Main Post:
2015 Accord EX I4 CVT.
I replaced the original OEM group R51 battery to a group 35 interstate battery. I did it only with the information that others have switched to group 35 (and no other specifications) since the OEM is believed to be too small.
So I wanted to make sure, is there only one type of group 35 battery, or multiple different types that I need to pay attention to Dimension wise, it fits flush to the metal tray, and car seems to work fine.
Also is there any purpose for plastic battery trays and covers? Making the switch to group 35 involves going without those plastic pieces around the battery.
Thanks!
Top Comment: BCI group sizes determine the physical characteristics of a battery. There are a handful of manufacturers, and they sell product to many different distributors/brands. Interstate is a distributor/brand name, and they are made by JCI. JCI makes "top shelf" products for many distributors/retailers/brands outside of Interstate, including Walmart and Costco. A JCI flooded led acid group 35, is the same thing regardless of label. JCI also makes/owns Optima. Which is why an Optima group 35 is an Optima group 35, regardless of who sells it... You have a hybrid, correct? They used the Civic gr. 51-R in the Accord hybrids, because hybrid engines don't "need" a starting battery, and the 51r is the cheapest OEM (Yuasa) battery Honda buys in the millions and millions. However - A 51-r will fit in a 35 tray, and it's cheaper for Honda not to have to change the tray between hybrid and gas for the Accord, and the v-6 needs a 24f in regards to OEM power ratings, for the batteries Honda buys by the millions... So, yeah - If you can fit a 35 in the tray, the bigger battery from an equivalent manufacturer will have more power, and be a "better" battery than a smaller battery - From the same manufacturer, assuming all other things are equal. No - There is no "one" gr. 35... In terms of quality of manufacturer, and overall value. A Yuasa 35-500 may be just as good or better than a JCI 35-500... A bad batch of either, at an average of 72 per pallet, and that adds up quick. :) They are both quality products. Neither company makes those mistakes, because both companies are OEM suppliers for various vehicle manufacturers.
